Special Education/Begwaanmenjigejig Kinomaagziwin

The Wiikwemkoong Board of Education believes that all students have the potential to learn and that all students should progress to the best of their ability.  We support their progress by offering the following services in our schools:
 
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Speech and Language Assessment
  • Psychoeducational Assessments
  • Behaviour Intervention
 
Each school works collaboratively with Care Coordinators from Aasgaabwitwindwaa Binoojiinhik Wiin ni Gshkiwewziwaat (ABWnG) to offer the above-noted services year-round.
 
Parents and guardians of students with exceptionalities are encouraged to maintain open communication with their student's teachers, the SERT assigned to work with their child, and Mr. Fox, the Principal. ([email protected]

The Special Education Department at the High School consists of two Special Education Resource Teachers (SERTs) and a team of Education Assistants (EAs).  
General Special Education Resource Teacher (SERT)
 
The General SERT at the High School works with any students in mainstream classes who have an Individual Education Plan (IEP).  The General SERT assists classroom teachers with accommodations and modifications that help ensure students are successful in the classes in which they are enrolled.  
 
Cathy Harley
Ms. Cathy Harley is the General SERT for the High School.  She is responsible for supporting the classroom teachers with accommodating and modifying programs for students in mainstream classes.  She also completes Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students who attend mainstream classes.  She schedules Individual Placement and Review Committee (IPRC) meetings and collaborates with ABWnG to schedule services for our students.

Life Skills Special Education Resource Teacher (SERT)
 
The Life Skills SERT works with students who have been assigned to the Life Skills room.  The Life Skills SERT is responsible for assessing the students to determine where they are in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics.  Using this data, the  SERT plans individualized programs to meet the learning needs of the students and works collaboratively with the Educational Assistants (EAs) to implement the programs. The  SERT monitors student progress and adjusts programming as required to help students be successful.  
 
Cathy HarleyMr. Richard Wilson is the Life Skills SERT.  In addition to assessing, planning, and programming for students, he works with classroom teachers to ensure the successful inclusion of Life Skills students into mainstream classrooms.  He completes Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students in the Life Skills classroom as well as regular reports to keep parents informed about the progress that is being made with student learning. Mr. Wilson participates in Individual Placement and Review Committee (IPRC) meetings and collaborates with ABWnG to ensure that students receive the services required.
