Message from our Principal

Aanii, Boozhoo! Valerie O'Leary nindizhinikaaz. Carrier of the Blue/Green cloth Nindigoo Ojibwemong. Migizi nindoodem. Wikwemikong nindoonjibaa. Tehkummah nindaa.

ValMy name is Valerie O'Leary, and I am deeply honored to introduce myself as the new Principal of Wikwemikong High School, established January, 2025. I carry the Blue/Green Cloth and come from a mixed heritage, with both Scottish and Ojibwe roots. My Ojibwe ancestry connects me to the Migizi (Eagle) clan and the community of Wikwemikong, while my Scottish background enriches my identity with the wisdom of both cultures.

As an educator, I am guided by Indigenous perspectives and pedagogy. Over the past 20 years, I have had the privilege of working alongside exceptional colleagues, and I am excited to continue this work with them. My commitment to the students of Wikwemikong High School is to ensure they have a positive educational experience that helps build and foster a sense of belonging and pride as Anishinaabe individuals. I am committed to providing them with the tools and knowledge in their educational bundle to succeed, both within and beyond our community's borders.

My educational philosophy is deeply rooted in Indigenous perspectives, which emphasize the importance of community, respect, and holistic learning. I believe that education should not only impart academic knowledge but also nurture the spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being of students. By integrating Indigenous teachings and values into our curriculum, we can create a learning environment that respects and honors the unique identities of our students. This approach helps students develop a strong sense of self and cultural pride, empowering them to become confident and capable individuals.

With two decades of experience in education, including teaching and leadership roles, I look forward to serving as a bridge between our students, teachers, parents/guardians, the Wikwemikong community (including local departments and organizations), and other partners. Together, we will drive forward change that reflects our shared goals of fostering inclusive and equitable programming, placing our students and their future at the center of all we do.

I am thrilled to collaborate with the students, staff, and families of Wikwemikong High School. Together, we will continue to build on the strength and resilience of our community, ensuring a bright future for all.

Miigwetch,

Valerie O'Leary
